Services for former Southern University Associate Professor of English Leslie H. Dawson will be held Saturday.
Dawson died Tuesday at age 69.
A native of Augusta, Ga., and a resident of Baton Rouge since 1985, Dawson retired from Southern in 1985 with 32 years' service and taught part-time since.
Dawson was an Army veteran of World War II and received a Purple Heart during service in the 92nd infantry, Buffalo Division. He also was a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Fraternal Press and faculty adviser for Southern's Student Digest for many years.
In 1973, he was appointed by former Gov. Edwin W. Edwards to the Louisiana Bicentennial Commission.
Visiting will be at Thurman-Thurman Mortuary, Alice Johnson Memorial Chapel from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Phi Beta Sigma fraternity rites will follow. Religious services are scheduled at Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church at 1 p.m. Saturday, with burial in Southern Memorial Gardens.

Died Tuesday, Oct 24, 1989, at his residence in Baton Rouge. He was 69, and a native of Augusta, Ga., and a resident of Baton Rouge since 1953. He retired in 1985 as associate professor of English at Southern University, with 32 years service. He was a part-time teacher since his retirement. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, having served from 1941-45 in Italy in the 92nd infantry, Buffalo division where he was wounded and received a Purple Heart. Visiting at Thurman-Thurman Mortuary, Alice Johnson Memorial Chapel, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday and 8 a.m. to noon Saturday. Phi Beta Sigma fraternity rites at 7 p.m. Friday at the mortuary, with family visitation to follow until 9 p.m. Visiting at Camphor Memorial United Methodist Church, 1 p.m. until religious services at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, conducted by Dr. Moses T. Jackson Sr. Burial in Southern Memorial Gardens. Survived by wife of 36 years, Hallique Dawson; two daughters, Pamela Dawson Johnson, Augusta, and Lorainne Dawson Nesbitt, Houston, Texas; two sons, Wymon Dawson, Manassas, Va., and Konrad L. Dawson, M.D., Washington, D.C.; two sisters, Mary Ruth Collier and Josephine Taylor, both of Augusta; and two brothers, Dr. Leonard E. Dawson, Denmark, S.C., and Ambassador HoraceG. Dawson Jr., Washington , D.C.; and five grandchildren, Javen Hashim McCaster, Quentin Leslie Johnson, Que Bridgette Johnson, Vincent Terrell Johnson and Sedric Renard Nesbitt. Preceded in death by parents, Horace G. Sr. and Mary Belle Dawson, Augusta. He received a bachelor's degree in English at Paine College and a master's degree in English at Atlanta University and further studies at Colorado State University. He was a member of Phi Beta Sigma fraternity, Fraternal Press, faculty adviser for theSouthern University Student Digest for many years.
