"Norton G. Bailey Called By Death At Age 78"
"Had Been A Resident Of Rockford For Over Fifty Years"
Norton G. Bailey of 311 South Henrietta avenue, highly respected resident of Rockford for over fifty years, died yesterday afternoon at 4 o'clock at his home, pnemonia supervening after an illness of a month of influenza.
Mr. Bailey was born in Jewett, Green county, N.Y., November 9, 1840. When nineteen years of age he chose the life of a sailor and made several voyages on whaling vessels to the northern Atlantic and southern Pacific oceans. He made one cruise of four years duration on the ship John Cogshell, which sailed from New Bedford, Mass., in 1859, ports not being touched oftener than once every six months. Later he made three voyages between New York and San Juan, Nicaragua, six months being required for each trip. He came to Rockford in 1866 and has since continuously resided in this city.
For twenty-five years Mr. Bailey was janitor of Rockford college when it was a seminary and Miss Sill was principal. Later he was stock-keeper for the Rockford electric for fifteen years.
Besides the widow, Mrs. Emmerette Dickerman Bailey, whom he married at New Milford on February 14, 1867, he is survived by six children, Herbert E. Bailey, Mrs. Carrie A. Burt, Miss Bertha E. Bailey, Clarence M. Bailey, Mrs. Addie Prince, and Mrs. Bessie Hanstine all of Rockford. The grandchildren are Norton Burt, Herbert Bailey Jr., Dorothy Prince, Faith Hanstine and Raymond Burt, all of this city.
Mr. Bailey joined the Methodist Episcopal denomination in the east many years ago and for the last seventeen years had been active in the affairs of the Winnebago St. M.E. church, which celebrated his golden wedding on Feburary 14, 1917, with a supper and reception at which many expressions of esteem were voiced.
Funeral services will be held at the late residence, Friday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Wm. W. Shimmin officiating, internment will be made in the West Side cemetery.
