"John Andrews Dies Thursday Night, Aged 91"
"Lived in Rockford Since 1861"
John Andrews, 1723 School street, aged 91 years, died Thursday night at 9:30 o'clock, after a six weeks illness of diseases incident to his advanced age.
Funeral services will be held will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the School street home.
Mr. Andrews is survived by the widow, Miranda Andrews and two sons. They are attorneys Harry B. Andrews, Rockford, and Ernest J. Andrews, Chicago. His eldest son, Charles W. Andrews, died in 1899. He also leaves nine grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren.
He was born in 1831 in Farmersville, Posey county, Ind. As a boy he lived on the farm with his parents and after attaining manhood he was engaged in farming and fruit growing. In 1858 he married in 1858 he married Miranda Piper, who was then living in Illinois. Soon afterward they moved to Illinois, living for some time in the southern part of the state, and in 1861 they moved to Rockford and had since that date lived continually in this city. He purchased a farm west of Rockford, but for many years live within the city limits at 1330 School street on a small tract of land.
For many years Mr. Andrews was interested in fruit growing and was one of the pioneers in Winnebago in raising berries. He was one of the owners of Rockford Canning company when it was first established. His principal word however was farming.
Mr. Andrews was intensely interested in the growth and development of all kinds of plant life. He planted many fruti and shade trees and there are now growing in western part of the city many large elm and maple trees, planted and cared for by him. At his home are among others walnut, butternut and chestnut trees in hearing of the latter being rarely found in Illinois.
The father of Mr. Andrews was Monsr. Seely Andrews of Bethel.
