Charles was born to immigrant parents Lawrence F.J. Johnson (Lars Fredrik Jansson) of Sweden and Rosanna Dolan of Roscommon, Ireland. They were divorced before 1920, and had one son, Edward. Charles married Fannie Lee Brown on 26 Jan 1923 in Chicago, Illinois. They had three children. Charles worked as a piano tuner for the Chicago Board of Education 1920-1930, and as a music teacher and musician the remainder of his life. One of his hobbies was making and blending perfumes. He died at his home in El Monte as a student sat waiting for a violin lesson. Widowed in 1935, he never remarried.
