John Bartholdi was born 29 May 1881 in Sant'Orsola Terme, Tirol, Austria. The land where he was born was annexed to Italy after World War I, but he was Austrian/Tyrolean when born and growing up and when he left his country and when he became naturalized in the USA.

He was baptized Giovanni Bertoldi, but changed his name when he came to America.

John immigrated to USA in 1899, first to Central City, Colorado staying for a brief time with his brother Basilio and working at mining but moved to The Dalles, Oregon about 1903. He worked at a number of jobs including stone mason, laying concrete, and railroad work. His "Bartholdi" name was seen in a number of the sidewalks of The Dalles throughout the early years of the city.

He married Marie Kargl on January 1, 1908 at St. Peter's Catholic Church and they had 10 children: Ben, August, Linus, Mary, Florence, Paul, Les, Everett, Marie and Albert.
He died 29 December 1938 in The Dalles, Oregon
