Norman Abele Is Killed At Leyte

Corporal Technician Norman F. Abele, 26, one of the three members of his family serving in the armed forces in the Pacific area, was killed in action on Leyte Island in the Philippines on Oct. 20, according to a telegram received late Monday by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Erwin G. Abele of 1117 W. Washington-st. Cpl. Abele, a graduate of Sandusky High school where he was active in athletics, had been overseas for 21 months, serving with an armored unit. He was a painter before entering service. His brother, Sgt. Walter Abele, has been home on furlough for a week after serving for two and a half years in the Pacific area. A sister, Mrs. Virginia Roth is a member of the Seabees and has been overseas for six months. Other survivors include two brothers, George and Charles, both of Sandusky, and a sister, Mrs. Helen Knauer of Toledo. Rites Tuesday

The body of Corporal Technician Norman F. Abele, who was killed in action on Leyte Island in the Philippines on Oct. 20, 1944, will arrive in Sandusky Monday afternoon and friends may call at the Frey Funeral Home after 7:30 that night. Services for the Pacific veteran, son of Mr. and Mrs. Erwin G. Abele, 1117 W. Washington-st, will be Tuesday at 2 p.m., Dr. T. J. C. Stellhorn, officiating. Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Corporal Abele, one of three brothers in the armed forces in the Pacific area, was 26 years old at the time of his death and had been overseas 21 months with an armored unit. He was a graduate of Sandusky High and was employed here as a painter. Surviving him, besides his parents, are three brothers, Walter, Madison, Ind., George and Charles, both of Sandusky, and two sisters, Mrs. Virginia Roth and Mrs. Helen Knauer, both of Sandusky.
