"WARREN - Loran L. Johnson, 85, of Warren went to be with his Lord on Friday, April 6, 2007. Born Jan. 8, 1922, to Andrew Carson Johnson and Minnie Lee McKuin Johnson, he was a native of the Formosa Community in Van Buren County.

"Preceding him in death were his parents; three brothers, Arlie Johnson, James Johnson and Richard Johnson; and six sisters, Linda Chicoski, Roxa Johnson, Gerta Yielding, Viola Boyer, Ruby Goff and Etta Chlepciak.

"Loran is survived by his wife of 58 years, Madge Bryant Johnson of Warren; three children, Wayne Johnson and wife Susan of Warren, LoraNelle Humphrey and husband Carl of Stuttgart, and Camille Johnson Lide of Little Rock. He is also survived by three grandsons of whom he was very proud: Bryan Humphrey of Hot Springs, Allan Humphrey of Stuttgart and David Lide of Little Rock. Other survivors include many nieces and nephews.

"Noted as the founder of the Bradley County Pink Tomato Festival, Johnson began the festival in 1956 during his tenure as manager of the Warren Chamber of Commerce. Johnson was a member of the First Baptist Church of Warren, where he enjoyed his role as program chairman for the Brotherhood Men's Group.

"During World War II, he served in the Navy on the Texas coast. Upon returning to Arkansas, he took a college entrance examination, having left high school when his father died. Johnson received a Bachelor of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Arkansas and then taught in Swifton and Warren,sponsoring the Future Farmers of America (FFA).

"Johnson spent many hours promoting Warren and southeast Arkansas following his retirement from the Southeast Arkansas Economic Development District. He was instrumental in developing the Bradley County Industrial Development Commission.

"Johnson raised Polled Hereford cattle, served on the board of the Saline Ouachita Valley Livestock Association and was a member of the Arkansas Cattleman's Association. He was on the First State Bank Community Board and also recipient of the Delta Counseling Associate's Community Service Award where he also served on their board of directors.

"He was Legislative Chairperson for the Bradley County Retired Teachers' Association and received the Arkansas Retired Teachers' Achievement Award. A member of the American Legion, he helped raise funds and plan the Bradley County Veterans Museum. Johnson was a delegate to the Arkansas Silver-Haired Legislature and served on the State Fire Ant Board.

"Each fall his former FFA students gather for a reunion. He was especially honored by "Loran's Boys" establishing the Loran Johnson Endowed Scholarship Fund at the University of Arkansas at Monticello. A scholarship is awarded annually to an early childhood education major. Johnson strongly believed that the foundation of one's education is important.

"Family visitation will be Monday, April 9th from 6-8 p.m. at Frazer's Funeral Home in Warren. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, April 10th at 10 a.m. at the First Baptist Church in Warren by Dr. Wayman Mann and Rev. Greg Stanley. Burial will be in Parker-Prospect Cemetery in Bradley County under the direction of Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home of Monticello.
