Francis E. Matthews, 75, of 230 Lurgan Ave., Shippensburg, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, at the Chambersburg Hospital.
A son of the late George and Clara Whisler Matthews, he was born in Leesburg, Southampton Township, Cumberland County, on Sept. 19, 1902. He was married to Helen C. Suders Matthews.
He was a graduate of Shippensburg public schools. Mr. Matthews was a retired employee of The Patriot-News Co. of Harrisburg, following more than 40 years of employment.
A member of the Robert Burns Lodge No. 464 F&AM, Harrisburg, he also belonged to the Harrisburg Consistory of the Scottish Rite, Zembo Temple of the Shrine; was a charter member of the Zembo Oriental Band and the Zembo Luncheon Club; and was a member of the Shippensburg Scottish Rite Club and the International Typographical Union No. 14. Mr. Matthews was a member of the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) and for many years had been affiliated with the Boy Scout programs in the greater Harrisburg area.
