John Lawrence Allison is the son of Jesse Allison and Mariam "Mary" Foley, born Sept 1830 in Madison County, Illinois. In 1840 John's family moved west-ward to Cooper County, Missouri. In Cooper County he met and married Amanda F. Reid on 3 Aug 1856. John L started his career in medicine while in Cooper County; studying also at the Missouri Medical College in St. Louis.
During the Civil War, John Allison sided with the Confederacy; he was captured and sent to POW Camp at Alton, Illinois. He was released after taking an Oath of Allegiance to the US. After his release John practiced medicine in Alhambra and Pocahontas in Illinois. In 1863 he was licensed to practice medicine in Bond County, Illinois.
After the Civil War, John's older brother Hugh Allison relocated to Wayne County, Missouri. Hugh wrote to John requesting that he likewise relocate to Wayne County. John did so in 1868 along with his family. John continued to practice medicine and prospered in Wayne County; venturing into such enterprises as construction, milling, and merchandising. John's first wife, Amanda Reid Allison, died in Jan 1873. John and Amanda had seven children listed below. In Mar 1874, John married his second wife, Nancy Macom. John and Nancy had 8 more children, but only three were surviving as of the 1900 census. The three children not listed below are:

Toney L Allison (1887-?) and
Elle Allison (1867-?)
John Lawrence Allison died in 1900 and his second wife Nancy died 4 years latter in 1904. His Will is listed as a part of Record of Wills pg 116-117 in Wayne Co., MO. 1900
