Harry R. Baker was born in Granite Falls, Minn., on May 14, 1882, the son of Robert and Emma Hart Baker. The family lived at Wood Lake, Minn., where he attended public schools. He graduated from Redwood Falls High School. In 1907 he graduated from Hamline University Medical School in Minneapolis. On June 3, 1908, he was married in Minneapolis to the former Ella Birum of Redwood Falls. He practiced medicine for Oilver Mining Company at Gilbert, Minn., and in 1909 moved to Waltham. In 1912 the family moved to Hayfield where Dr. Baker practiced medicine until he retired in 1962.

Dr. Harry Baker received the Selective Service Medal of Honor from Gov. Thye of Minnesota and a Certificate of Merit by the U.S. Congress and signed by President Harry S. Truman for his uncompensated examinations of men entering military service in World War II.

In 1951 the High School auditorium was filled to capacity at a reception for Dr. Baker after 39 years at Hayfield. In 1957 he was admitted to the Fifty Club of the Minnesota State Medical Society denoting fifty years of his practice of medicine.

Dr.and Mrs.Baker celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1958. They have resided in the same home in Hayfield for over 60 years.

Survivors include his widow, Ella; one son, Dr. Russell Baker of Champaign, Ill., who practiced medicine with his father for 17 years in Hayfield before specializing in x-ray work; and one daughter, Mrs. Don (Doris) Gilmer of Delano, Minn.; eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Fred (Doris) Goettel of Westby, Wis., and Mrs. Hazel Cryder of Monooka, Ill.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 28, 1973, at the First Presbyterian Church, Hayfield, with Rev. Myrwood Bagne of Trinity Lutheran Church officiating. Organist was Mrs. Mary Holton and soloist was Mrs. Eldon Peterson. Casket bearers were Larrie Peterson, George Leist, Milward Simonson, Virgil Haugen, Russell Stehley and Carroll Palmer. Spring interment will be in Fairview Cemetery. Arrangements were made by Cole Funeral Chapel, Hayfield.
