Levi Acker was born on 29 September 1826 in Pennsylvania, son of Daniel Acker and Catherine Clauser. He was married on 8 February 1856 in Will County, Illinois to Martha Jane Jordan. Martha was born on 18 April 1837 in New York, daughter of Lee Jordan and Louise Marshall.
On 3 July 1860, Levi, Jane, and their one-year-old daughter Ellen Mary lived in Franklin, Will County, Illinois. Levi worked as a teamster. The family owned $200 in personal property.
Levi served in Company C of the 100th Illinois Infantry during the Civil War. He enlisted at Mokena, Illinois on 29 July 1862 as a Private. He was mustered out as a Private at Nashville, Tennessee on 12 June 1865.
On 25 August 1870, the couple and three children- Ellen, Andrew, and Willard- lived in Traverse City. Levi worked as a farm laborer while Martha kept house. The two oldest children were attending school. The family owned $200 in personal property. In 1873, Levi was working for the Superintendent of the Poor, earning $33.33 a month. The following year it was reported that: The poor farm still remains under the charge of Mr. Acker who was re engaged in April last for one year, at a salary of $450. We take pleasure in saying that Mr. Acker has managed the Farm economically and to our entire satisfaction. A variety of crops were grown on the farm including wheat, oats, corn, peas, beans, and "many garden vegetables." In December 1874, Levi was elected to the position of Steward for the Grand Traverse Grange.
On 7 June 1880, the couple and four children- Elen M., Andrew, Willard, and Mary- lived on a farm in Traverse township. Willard had attended school in the previous year. Andrew was listed as having consumption (Andrew and Ellen were counted elsewhere in 1880 as well).
Levi received an Invalid Pension for his Civil War service on 9 August 1890.
In 1894, Levi was living in Garfield township. In December 1897, Levi was elected Gatekeeper and Martha was elected Ceres for the Grand Traverse Grange.
The couple has not been located on the 1900 census.
Levi died on 11 January 1902 from pneumonia at 652 Carver Street in Traverse City. In August 1902 a Veteran's tombstone was ordered for his grave at Oakwood Cemetery. Martha received a Widow's Pension on 1 November 1902.
On 12 April 1910, Martha lived with her daughter Mary (Acker) Grattop in Traverse City.
Martha died at 652 Carver Street in Traverse City from senility on 12 February 1918 in Grand Traverse County.
Levi and Martha (Jordan) Acker were the parents of five children:
i. Ellen Mary Acker was born in 1859/1860 in Illinois. On 4 June 1880, Ella was a house servant at Daniel and Maria Page's home in Long Lake township.
ii. Andrew Acker was born in 1861/1862 In Illinois. On 28 June 1880, Andrew lived in a lumber camp in Grant township, Grand Traverse County. Andrew died on 15 May 1881 and was buried in Linwood Cemetery. The Grand Traverse Herald noted: Andrew Acker died on last Sunday week of consumption. His remains were buried at the Long Lake cemetery. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. John Cook at the Central school house.
iii. Willard Acker was born circa 1866/1867 in Illinois.
iv. Herman L. Acker was born on 12 June 1871 in Traverse township. Herman died on 2 September 1872 in Traverse township from dysentary.
v. Mary Acker was born on 17 September 1873 Traverse City. She was married to George Grattop.
