Martin was born in Cornwall, England. He came to the United States in 1854 and mined coal in Pennsylvania. Later that year he traveled to North Michigan where he mined for copper. In 1855 he came to California and mined gold in Weaverville and later in Scott Bar where he was very sucessfull. He served on the Board of Supervisors in Siskiyou County.
