John B. Armstrong was born in Fort Logan, Colorado. Since his father, Col. Elmer J. Armstrong was an officer in the army the family spent time in the Philippines, Panama, Georgia, Indiana, and Ohio. He graduated with a Masters Degree in Chemical Engineering and was a member of ROTC at Ohio State University.
After graduating from OSU he moved to California and married Adele Hugus. He worked for a vitamin company until the outbreak of the war with Germany.
Because of his ROTC training he entered the army early in 1942. During World War II he served in the 3rd Division, 15th Infantry Regiment and saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, and Southern France. He earned a Silver Star in the Battle of Mignano Gap leading up to the Battle of Mt. Cassino. He took part in five amphibious landings during the war. Captain Armstrong came home for R&R to California in Oct, 1944 and was preparing for deployment to the Pacific when the war ended.
After the war he worked for Standard Oil of California at Santa Fe Springs, Taft and Signal Hlll, California. In Signal Hill he became President of Lomita Gasoline.
He was survived by his wife, nine children and 19 grandchildren.
