Birth: 1754
Chesterfield County
Virginia, USA
Death: 1795
Prince Edward County
Virginia, USA

Phoebe was the daughter of Thomas Edwards of Dale Parish in Chesterfield County, Virginia. Her mother is unknown. Many descendants think that Phoebe was married to John Baugh, although a marriage hasn't been found. It is believed that Phoebe and John died together in some sort of accident. They left 10 children and two properties, one, a tobacco plantation with slaves that he was to inherit at his mother's death in Chesterfield County and the one they lived on in Prince Edward County. The court in Prince Edward County appointed Thomas Trent(her brother-in-law) of Buckingham County as the guardian of the children. The children moved to Buckingham County to live with their guardian. The court records never give the name of the parents of the orphaned Baugh children.

Charles Bartlett Baugh
Caroline Baugh

Elizabeth "Betsy" Baugh

Note: There is no direct evidence found, so far, that John Baugh's wife was Phoebe Edwards, as many descendants are saying, although her father names her as Phebe Baugh in his Will. John (and Phoebe?) were living at the time of their deaths in Prince Edward County. The indirect evidence is that, usually, a close uncle or other family member became the guardian of the children. Since Thomas Trent was married to Elizabeth Edwards, a half-sister to Phoebe, it indicates a close relationship, meaning that John Baugh's wife probably was Phoebe Edwards. The other indirect evidence is that Phoebe's father left her a slave in his Will named Agge. In the inventory of John Baugh's Chesterfield estate, there was a slave named Magge (with child). It is believed that Agge and Magge are one and the same. Those are two indirect indications that point to Phoebe Edwards as being the woman John Baugh had married and was the mother of his children.
