Fred was a Confederate War Veteran who served in Russell's 4th Cavalry from Madison County, AL. He joined the Confederate Army at age 16 and stayed the duration of the War. He was under the command of General Joseph Wheeler. When the war was over, Fred did not have a horse and had to walk 300 miles to get back home. Starving and in a weak condition, he passed out on a road. Two older unmarried sisters saw him and brought him to their house. They fed and took care of him for three weeks. He felt better and finished his walk home. When he arrived home, he was told the news that his younger brother, Jimmy had died while he was gone. He married first wife, Mary Ann Eliza McMullen on Jan. 8, 1867 in Madison Co., AL # 2 Susan Kesiah Jenkins, widow of Robert. S. Phipps on Dec. 28, 1871, Madison Co., AL # 3 Eva H. Neely c. 1903, place unknown. Fred's parents were Gilford Bennett and Eliza Jane Culp.

According to Fred's obituary, he was survived by his wife and five brothers: W.T., F.S., G.C. Bennett of Gurley; R.W. Bennett of Owens Cross Road and George T.. Bennett of Huntsville; a daughter, Mrs. A.E. Hanly of Birmingham; a son-in-law, Charles Maures of Huntsville; a granddaugther, Mrs. Gladys Maures Parker of Dallas, Tex.

Note : On the 1920 Census, a 13-year old girl named, Hattie is mistakely listed as a daughter of Fred & Eva. She was not their daughter. Most likely, she was Eva's niece who was staying with them.
