Aug. 7, 1925 - Feb. 17, 2003
SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Former Pendleton High School English instructor and librarian, James Harrison Adams, 77, of San Diego, Calif., died Monday, Feb. 17, 2003, at San Diego of heart and lung malfunction.
A celebration of life gathering was held at his home on Feb. 23. Inurnment with his wife, Dorothy Niel Adams, will be in Oregon.
Mr. Adams was born Aug. 7, 1925, at Pontiac , Ill.
He served as librarian and English teacher at Pendleton
High School from 1954-1960. It was said he often described his time at Pendleton High School as the finest in 32 years in education. He was a lifelong librarian at secondary schools throughout the country, and respected the written word.
"I don't believe anything in any way, shape or form will ever replace it. If you can't turn on the button or if the electricity fails, or a thousand things go wrong, you've still got a book in your hands; you can learn, you can enjoy, you can escape. These things make the 'vale of tears' more passable," he said.
One of his challenges, he said, was to inveigle the book hater into reading. He used a few sure-fire books to hook them as a starter and "guided them on from there."
While at Pendleton, in addition to his other duties he directed an annual all-school play.
He had also taught English in Illinois and Wyoming.
In 1960 he moved to San Diego where he was a high school librarian for 22 years, retiring in 1982.
Mr. Adams began his career in what he termed a "goof-off" job, as a post librarian in the army. After discharge he graduated with honors from the University of Illinois and later earned a degree in library science at the University of Denver.
In 1957, he married Dorothy Niel, also a University of Denver graduate, at Salem, Ore. His wife taught in Pendleton from 1958-1960, developing a program for gifted elementary students. She died in 1997.
Mr. Adams was an active supporter of educational, environmental and animal causes.
He was an avid reader, passionate about books, politics and his beloved twin poodles.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Pendleton High School Library.
