L. Adams, retired merchant and prominent citizen of Oregon City, died suddenly yesterday morning at 5:30 o'clock in Good Samaritan Hospital, Portland. He underwent a major operation 10 days ago and was recovering satisfactorly, a sudden heart attack causing his death. He was 62 years old.
Lewellyn Adams was born in Pequanie, N.J., March 16, 1873, the youngest of three children of Allen H. and Mary McGeorge Adams. He lived in New York City until 12 years of age, when the Adams family came west to Texas and later to San Francisco and Portland. Thirty six years ago, L. Adams came to Oregon City and established a mercantile store at Fifth and Main Sts. A short time later, he founded the Golden Rule Bazaar at Sixth and Main Streets, which later became known as the Adams Department Store. In 1917 he sold the stock and furnishings of the store and retired. Since retiring, Mr. Adams had devoted much time to his 220-acre country place on Milk Creek in the Colton district, which was the scene of many enjoyable picnics for the family and their friends and church folk in recent years.
Mr. Adams was married on August 3, 1903 to Ina M. Chase, daughter of a prominent pioneer family.
Besides his widow, Ina M. Chase, of 923 Center Street, he leaves a nephew, Allen Adams and a great niece and great
nephew in Portland; two sisters-in-law, Mrs. Gilbert L. Hedges, of Los Angles and Mrs. Arthur C. Howland, of this city. He was brother-in-law of the late S. O. Dillman (Nettie Chase) of this city and of the late Ivan Chase of Chehalis, Wa., and the uncle by marriage of Miss Judith Hedges, teacher in the Auburn Junior High School in Los Angles; Miss Barbara Hedges of San Francisco, Miss Elizabeth Howland of Salem, James Howland of Oregon City and Evan Chase of San Diego. He was a brother of the late Charlotte Cuches and John Adams, both of Portland.
Funeral services will be held on wednesday at 2:30 o'clock from the First Coongregational Church, Dr. E. P. Borden, pastor, officiating. Internment will be in Mountain View Cemetery. The body is at the Holman & Hankins Mortuary.
