There has been much published information about the wives of Robert Adams, Sr. father of John Adams who married Mary Ann Wolf Setles, but I believe some of it to be incorrect. Documents do show: a Robert Adams marrying Ellen Brown and Elizabeth Ferguson. If this Ellen Brown is connected to THIS Robert it is likely that I will not be able to verify this, as no family records have surfaced to confirm it. And if it did occur, there were probably no children involved because of the short time between marriages. My records will not show an Ellen Brown as Robert Adams's second marriage until more evidence is found. The given name Ellen does not show up in any of Robert's children or grandchildren.
As for Patience Hall being Robert's first wife, I also believe that to be incorrect. The only record known which could confirm this is a marriage record in Mason Co., KY, listing marriage of a Robert Adams to Patience Hall (or Hull) 19 Mar 1796. Now, Mason County is 2 - 4 counties east (depending on which way you go) of Madison Co., KY, in 1800.
Also, wife's first name is given as Sarah as grantor with Robert Adams in a deed to John Bennett; Madison Co., KY, Deeds; Book D, page 328; recorded Nov 7, 1798. This occurred just before the James and Agnes Adams family moved to Christian County about 1799.
Another bit of evidence comes from the James Taylor Collection article in Vol. 4, 1974 issue of the "Adams Addenda". The data states that Robert Adams Jr. married Patience (Patunie) Hull and lived near Chillicothe, OH. His sister lived in Mason Co., KY. Another Adams Addenda article in the 1992 issue says that Robert Adams was married in Mason Cu, KY, 1796, Mar 19 to Rachel Hull, where he was living as late as 1823. Both of these articles can't be true, but either one, if true, would negate any claim that this Patience Hall or Hull belongs to the Robert Adams as father of John Adams who married Mary Ann Wolf Settles.
