|Death: ||Oct. 7, 1864|
At age 36, Allen was a little older than most of his enlisted comrades when he was recruited into service with Co. K, 38TH IND INF on Oct. 12, 1862 out of Milltown, IN. He was wounded at the Battle of Stones River, TN on Dec. 31, 1862. Under circumstances not yet known, Allen was captured by the enemy and sent to Andersonville Prison in GA where he died of scorbutus on Oct 7, 1864. Many 38TH IND INF soldiers were captured on the first day of the Battle of Chickamauga (Sept. 19, 1863) and eventually shipped to Andersonville, but David Allen is not listed as an official casualty of that particular battle. His widow Elizabeth Garrett applied for and received a federal pension on April 6, 1905 (app. #825,563; cert. #604,685 - Indiana). Also, an "A. Stiles" successfully applied for a child guardian pension on June 29, 1868 (app. #162,440; cert. #119,876).
