|Death: ||Oct. 31, 1869|
To Armstrong family researchers of Armstrongs in Oquawka, this Thomas may have been the son of James and Jane (Watson) Armstrong. He was born in 1836 in Ireland, either in Co. Fermanagh or Co. Cavan.
Or he may have been the Thomas Armstrong born in Ireland in 1814, (making him 48 yrs. of age at this enlistment which is a little old for battle). What makes this of question is the death date as this was this Thomas' death date in some records. This Thomas has a family Headstone in this cemetery already but the Army was late in supplying a military headstone by 17 years.
(This work is in progress and should be reviewed periodically for the next development of sources.)
He enlisted as a private on 3 July 1862 for the Union in Illinois. He enlisted in Company G, 84th Infantry Regiment on Ist of Sept. 1862. He was discharged from the same company and regiment on 14 Apr 1863. At this stage of research it doesn't look as if he applied for a pension.
This headstone was provided by Mr.H.F.S. Gross of Lee, Mass. on Sept. 28, 1886
