ELDERLY PAULDING WOMAN DIES FROM FIRE IN HOME

PAULDING --- Mrs. Bertha Augustus, 18, of 805 W. Jackson St., Paulding, was dead on arrival at 7:30 p. m. yesterday, following a fire in her home. Death was attributed to asphyxiation, it was reported.

A mattress and a chair were destroyed in the fire. According to Paulding fire officials, the fire was apparently started by smoking in bed.

Born Sept. 19, 1880, in Paulding County, she was the daughter of Henry and Martha Ream. She is survived by one son, Clayton (Jack) Augustus of Paulding.

Services will be held at 2 p. m. Tuesday in the Crowell-Deniferder Funeral Home, the Rev. Hal Zug to officiate. Burial will be in the Bowholtz Cemetery, southeast of Paulding.

WOMAN IS ASPHYXIATED

Mrs. Bertha Augustus, 85, was asphyxiated, apparently when a cigarette ignited the mattress of her bed in the home, 805 West Jackson St., Paulding, about 5:45 p. m. Sunday.

Assistant fire Chief George Gassel who said it appeared that a cigarette caused the fire, summoned an ambulance from the Crowell - Den Herder Funeral Home. John Den Herder removed her to Paulding County Hospital where she was dead on arrival at 7:30 p. m.

Dense smoke filled the bedroom where the fire was confined to the mattress and a chair.

Mrs. Augustus was born in Paulding County on Sept. 19, 1880, a daughter of Henry and Martha (Hostler) Ream.

She leaves a son, Clayton (Jack) Augustus, Paulding.

Services were conducted at 2 p. m. Tuesday by the Rev. Hal Zug, pastor of the First Christian Church, Paulding at the Crowell-Den Herder Fuenral Home.

The burial was in the Bowholtz cemetery, southeast of Paulding.
