TEEN-AGE TRIO DIES IN OTTAWA SMASHUP
Train, Auto In Collision
OTTAWA -- Three Ottawa teen-agers (sic) were killed in a train-car crash today and two are in serious condition in St. Rita's hospital in Lima as a result of one of the worst traffic collisions ever recalled by Ottawa residents. Dead are: Thomas Ball, 16, son of Mrs. (sic) and Mrs. Francis Ball, 202 Fair Ave., Ottawa; Carl Blankemeyer, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Bernard Blankemeyer, 440 N. Walnut, Ottawa; and Thoms Ury, 19, Rt. 3, Ottawa.
In serious condition are Mike Kidd, 17, son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Kidd, Rt. 2, Ottawa, and Duane Ball, 15, brother of Thomas.
The youths, in a car driven by Thomas Ury, were traveling east on Second street in Ottawa at 12:40 a.m. when their car skidded 90 feet before hitting a freight train at the DTI crossing near the Weatherseal Plant.
Engineer D. I. Heeten of Flat Rock, Mich., and Conductor Harold D. Roberts of Trenton, Mich., said the train was traveling about 32 miles per hour. Engineer Heeten said he saw the youths attempt to stop, but the car swerved and skidded, then struck the back of the first car of the train.
The train was en route to Flat Rock. Damage to the train was estimated at $200.
Ambulance drivers at the scene said they first saw only two youths, hanging partially outside the car. After a search through the wreckage, they found the other boys, believed to have been riding in the back seat. Survivors Kidd and Duane Ball were believed to have been riding in the back seat.
Ury was driving a car from the Sykes Ford Agency where he was employed.
All youths except Ury were students at Ottawa High School.
The bodies of Thomas Ball and Carl Blankemeyer were taken to McCrate Funeral Home in Ottawa where arrangements are incomplete.
Ury's body is at the LaPoint Funeral Home, Ottawa.
