On October 2, 1996, two Guangxi farmers, Pan Qibin and Jiang Jun entered the Maoer Mountains to gather medicinal herbs. They found the wreckage of an aircraft and notified the government. In January 1997 after an on-the-spot investigation, a search team composed of Chinese and American experts confirmed that the plane was the B-24 Bomber Number 40783, belonging to the U.S. Army 14th Air Force lost 53 years earlier. Through the united efforts of the Chinese and American team, the remains of the crew were found in the virgin forest at an altitude of over 2000 mters. On January 17, 1997, in Beijing Capital Airport, representatives of the Chinese side transferred the remains of the crew of Bomber 40783 to the American representatives.
