ACKLAND, HAZEL FAYE—Hazel Faye Ackland, a Fillmore county resident her entire life, was born on a farm in Chelsea township on Feb. 1, 197, the third child to Wenzel and Dena (Peterson) Nun, and passed away in Geneva, on March 26, 1999, at the age of 92.

When she started to high school in Ohiowa, she boarded with a friend who succumbed to influenza in the epidemic of 1918. Hazel, also sick, returned home. Her mother soon caught the flu also and died. Hazel was never able to return to school, instead being dedicated to the care of her family; her father, brothers Clarence, Ralph, and John and sisters Bernice and DeVee.

On Jan. 1, 1933, she was united in marriage to Earl Ackland of near Geneva. Their three children, Laurence, Robert and Elaine were all born on the family farm northwest of Geneva. Hazel cared for her family faithfully and well during the hard times of the depression and the challenging days of World War II and after. Earl and Hazel retired to a home in Geneva in 1956, when Robert took over operation of the farm. After Earl passed away in 1978, Hazel continued to live at home until the infirmities of age required her to become a resident of Long Term Care in the Fillmore County Hospital in Geneva in 1995.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband, Earl, parents Wenzel and Dena, brothers, Clarence, Ralph and John, sister, Bernice and infant sister Velmie Irene.

She is survived by her sister DeVee Bonner; sister-in-law, Florence (Clarence) Nun; sons, Laurence and wife, Betty Lou; Robert and wife Joan; daughter Elaine and husband John Kucera; and by grandchildren Kevin Ackland, Michael and wife Anna Ackland, Kristen Ackland, Steve and wife Jean Ackland, Dan Ackland, Gene and wife Michelle Ackland. Tony Buhr, David Kucera and wife Leslie Robinson, James Kucera, Richard Kucera, and William Kucera; great-grandchildren Andrew, Brett, Jordon, Jake, Parker and Nicole Ackland, and Alyssa Kucera.

Funeral services were held on March 29, 1999, at the United Methodist Church in Geneva, Nebraska with the Rev. Dennis Linton-Hendrick officiating.
Susan Kleinschmidt accompanied Delwin V. Myers who sang “Rock of Ages” and “Amazing Grace.”
Casket bearers were Steve, Dan and Gene Ackland, Tony Buhr, Clarence Nun Jr., Robert Nun and Deryl Fox.

Interment was in the Geneva Public Cemetery.
