Melvin E. Akers, of Clayton, DE, 73, died on April 27, 2011. He was the husband of Thelma A. Everett Akers with whom he shared 51 years of marriage.
Born on November 18, 1937 in Princeton WV, he was preceded in death by his father, David C. Akers; mother, Thelma J. (Lyons) Akers; sisters, Margaret M. Yowell, Charlotte A. Havens. He was a graduate of Henry C. Conrad High School in Wilmington, DE, a 16 year Veteran of the U.S. Navy and employed by Guardian Construction Co. for 8 years. He was also employed by Greggo and Ferraro Construction Co. and James Julian and Sons. His interests included: racing cars, camping, boating, fishing and he enjoyed listening to Old Country Gospel Music.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his children, Brenda L. Sharpless of Aurora WV, Russell E. Akers of Clayton DE, Paul D. Akers of Middletown DE, Thomas J. Akers of Clayton DE and Richard W. Akers of Bear DE; 26 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend the funeral service officiated by Pastor Bob Harting at 11:30 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4, 2011 at Beeson Funeral Home, 2053 Pulaski Hwy., Newark De 19702 where the family will receive guests starting at 10:30. Interment will be at Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Bear DE.
