Uncle Kenny was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Irvin J. Bowman.

In 1921, he entered Dickinson Seminary at Williamsport, Pa. He also attended Albright College. Kenny graduated from Allegheny College in 1929. Kenny went on to receive his M.A. in 1935 at the Y.M.C.A. Graduate School in Nashville, Tennessee. He also did graduate work at Vanderbilt University, Searrit and Peabody colleges. After his graduation, Kenny worked as a director in the younger boys' work at the Y.M.C.A. at Lexington, Kentucky. He also taught in the socialogy department at Transylvania University. He taught Theology at William and Mary University as well. For the last years of his working career, he worked at Penn Traffic in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in the Furniture Department.

Kenny married Helen Harclerode on December 27, 1938 in Winchester, Virginia. They lived in Lexington, Kentucky after their marriage. There after they moved to Johnstown, Pennsylvania where they raised their three children. Upon retirement, they moved to Everett, Pennsylvania to the house where his wife was born.
