Jane "Jennie" Worthington, at age 19, arrived in the United Stated on September 13, 1886, aboard the S/S Servia. Her occupation was housemaid. Jane was living at 143-1/2 Vine Street at the time of the 1889 Flood. She was initially listed as "unaccounted for."
Jane met Evan David Powell, who was born in 1866 in Ebensburg. Evan David had moved to Johnstown in 1888 to work for the Johnson Company. They married on December 12, 1889. She was 22 and he 23. Evan was the son of Henry and Eleanor (Hughes) Powell. Jane and Evan David had eight children, but only two survived infancy.
September 9, 1939 Funeral for Mrs. Powell
Funeral services for Mrs. Jane (Worthington) Powell, 72, who died unexpectedly yesterday afternoon at her home, 146 Clarion Street, will be held at 2 o'clock Monday afternoon, at the Powell home. Rev. John H. Stanton, Pastor of the Westmont Presbyterian Church, of which Mrs. Powell was a charter member, and active in congregational affairs, will be in charge. Internment will be in the family plot in Grandview Cemetery, directed by the Gocher Funeral Home. Mrs. Powell was born in Llanidloes, Wales, on March 31, 1867, a daughter of Richard and Mary Morgan-Worthington. She was the last of the Worthington Family to pass away. Her husband, Evan David Powell, died 12 years ago. Surviving are two sons, Daniel Richard and Thomas Haydn Powell. The Powell family located to Johnstown many years ago. For a period of 20 years they resided on Conemaugh Street before going to Westmont to live 22 years ago. Mrs. Powell was a charter member and past officer of Hope Sisterhood, Dames of Malta. The Dames of Malta will hold ritualistic services at the Powell home at 8 o'clock tomorrow evening. Mrs. Powell was a charter member of the Protectors Assembly, a newly organized branch of the order.
Children preceding her in death were William Howell, Mary E., John H., Annie E., Walter Evan and Frances Elizabeth.
Siblings preceding her in death were John, Richard Henry, Ann (Mrs. Thomas Edward Evans), Thomas and Edward, both had resided in Wales. (bio by: Virginia Sobotkin)
