Charles Baird was an expert in signal equipment for railroads. He installed and was in charge of the signals, telegraph, and telephone lines in Pennsylvania Station. Baird enlisted in World War I and organized the 413th Telegraph Battalion, the first Signal Corps unit ordered overseas. The battalion trained employees of the Pennsylvania Railroad who volunteered form all parts of the line. Baird was 38 when he died overseas.
