Birth: Jul. 1, 1890
Kansas, USA
Death: Mar. 17, 1957
Cowley County

Lula May Askins was the first born child of Overly Barton Asbury and Sarah "Sallie" Ann Barger Asbury. To the best of my knowledge there were only 2 living children born to this couple, Lula May and John Ogden Asbury.

Lula May was born in Chelsea, Butler County, Kansas. She married Francis Barnhart - son of Henry Barnhart and Rachel Ellen Haworth. Lula May and Francis were parents to 3 sons, Arthur Ogden, John Willis (my Grandfather) and Leroy Francis "Pete". From all accounts that I can find Francis abandoned his wife and children when the youngest, Pete, was less than a year old. My Grandfather related that he had very little contact with this man after this and the 3 boys were primarily raised by their grandparents Overly and Sallie Asbury.

Lula May married George Walter Askins December 4, 1917 at the age of 27. There were two living children - Cecil Niles Askins and Iona May Askins Stewart. However, there are 5 children buried in Highland cemetery who were also from this marriage. From what I can find the children died at birth or at a very young age. There is also a 6th child that I recently found buried in South Prairie Cemetery in Cowley County who's parents are listed as George and Lula May Askins - her name is Mary Ellen, I do not know when she was born but she died March 14, 1922.

This has all left me scratching my head in wonder and I would love anyone who knows any history on my family who might be able to shed some light on this to please contact me.

Lula May died March 17, 1957 in Winfield from complications of a broken hip.

Interestingly her daughter Iona married and left her family and from all accounts never had anything to do with her family after.
