"Mrs. J.J. Brown, was born May 11th, 1837, died in Whiting, June 8, 1911, aged 74 years and 28 days. Mrs. Brown whose maiden name was Miss Elizabeth Black, was born in Freeport, Ohio, and early in life moved with her parents to Michigan, where she grew to girlhood, and was married to Mr. J.J. Brown October 31th 1861. Soon after their marriage they moved to Bureau County, Illinois, where they remained to the year 1870, when they came to Kansas, and settled in this community .... Her husband died at Whiting June 5th 1898, leaving the care of the four children to her .... When about twenty years of age Mrs. Brown was converted and united with the United Brethern Church, and remained a member in good standing until her death .... She leaves to mourn, Mrs. Jennie McLaughlin, Miss Rose, and Mrs. Hattie Ford all of whom live here in Whiting, and a son Mr. W.E. Brown who spent his early life here, but for about fourteen years has been in the employ of the Chicago Rock Island Rail Road and has lived in Fairbury, Nebraska, most of that time. Since 1897 he has served this company in the capacity of conductor, and three grandchildren .... Interment was in the Spring Hill cemetery .... The Whiting Journal, June 16, 1911."
