son of Rose Nazer and William T. Acton, married Viola George, 13 May 1940 in Roundup, Musselshell, Montana
Feb. 11, 1914 - Oct. 28, 2005
Gerald Lee Acton died October 28, 2005, in the New Horizons Care Center in Lovell of natural causes.
He was born in Dunkirk, Mont., the seventh child born to William Thomas and Rose Susanna Acton. His father died in 1918 in the flu epidemic and the next year the family came to Cowley, where there were other family members.
Gerald went to school in Cowley and loved participating in every sport. He especially loved football. He was always the biggest fan of his sons and grandsons in all their sports.
Mr. Acton started working with horses early in his life, and he always had horses. He loved to hunt and fish and ride in the mountains. He helped form the Cowley Riding Club and helped in rounding up the wild horses on the Pryor Mountains for the rodeo they sponsored every year.
Gerald married Viola George, also from Cowley, on May 13, 1940, in Roundup, Mont. They made their home in Cowley where they raised their five children. Gerald worked road construction and was away from home quite often, but the family would go with him in the summer to many interesting places. They had some great adventures together. In 1970 Gerald and Vie moved to Colstrip, Mont., where he worked for Long Construction in the strip mines and then in the power plants. He retired in 1978, and they moved back to their home in Cowley.
Gerald and Vie enjoyed their retirement, riding horses, helping move cattle, camping in the Big Horns, fishing, going on pack trips and cruises.
He was a lifetime member of the LDS Church. He and Vie were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple in May of 1955. Their children were sealed to them at that time. Gerald was an active member in the church and held many positions. He and Vie loved doing temple work and spent a lot of time in Idaho Falls.
Gerald was preceded in death by his parents; his five brothers and two sisters; his wife, Vie, after 58 years of marriage; and one grandson.
Mr. Acton is survived by his five children and their spouses, Helen Kay (Keith) Grant of Lovell, James Gerald (Trish) Acton of Spokane, Wash., Robert Lee (Barb) Acton of Cowley, Kenneth George (Susan) Acton and Susan Jane (Duane) Allred of Colstrip. He is also survived by 32 grandchildren, 71 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren, who think he was the best grandpa in the whole world. Services were held in Cowley at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Chapel on Tuesday, Nov. 1, 2005, at 11 a.m., with Bishop Ken Blackburn officiating. Interment followed in the Cowley Cemetery.
