Letter from Martha's husband, Silas James Fitzwater, to their daughter, Mary Bessie Fitzwater Phillips, who was residing in Darke Co., OH: "April 20, 1925. Dear Son and Daughter, With sad heart and trembling hand I [send] you and family a few lines. Well, Bessie, your mommy is gone to sleep. She is gone home, I hope to rest. So we have to say goodbye to our loved ones. We look around and see the old chair, vacant. We see her face no more at the table for so many years. My memory takes me back over 50 years as if it was yesterday. . . .
Your mother died Friday morning, April 10th, at 9:30. She was buried at Mt. Pleasant Sunday at 10:30, Rev. Jackson conducted the services . . . I wish you could have been here. Lloyd and Lona [Bryan] got here on Thursday evening. They stayed till Sunday. She was not taken bad till Monday afternoon."
From the local newspaper: "Martha Jane Fitzwater, wife of Silas J. Fitzwater, died April 10th at the home of her son, Tilden, on Clover Mountain, from dropsy of the heart. Deceased was nearing her 75th year when the Master called. She is survived by her husband and three children: M. J. Tilden Fitzwater, of Clover, where she died; Mrs. Lena Bryan, near Philippi, and Mrs. Mary B. Phillips of Greenville, Ohio; One brother, R. K. Phillips, of his city, also survives. One child, a girl, died in infancy. Funeral services were held at Mt. Pleasant Church by Rev. Jackson of M.E. Church, South, St. George, with interment immediately following in the cemetery nearby. Mrs. Fitzwater was one of the county's best women. A kind and loving mother and an obliging neighbor and her going will be deeply mourned by all who knew her."
