Birth: Dec. 4, 1861
Death: Jun. 13, 1904

Mrs. J. H. Blackford whose death occurred Monday, 13 June 1904 at her home late was buried Wednesday, 15 June in Oak Shade. Funeral services were held at the family residence 7 miles northwest of Marion conducted by Rev. W. C. Thompson. With Miss Quass at the organ, music was furnished by a quartette, composed of John Hickman, E. Evans, Mrs. Sibey & Miss Bertha Evans which sang, "Some Sweet Day Bye & Bye",
"My Mother's Hands" & "Nearer My God to Thee".
Rev. Thompson chose his text from Revelation, 3rd chapter, 1st clause, of the 5th verse. He that overcometh, shall be clothed in white raiment. From these words he spoke to a large crowd which gathered to pay their last respect to "the loved one gone".
Mrs. Blackford was beloved by all who knew her, not only in the community where she lived but in all the surrounding contry. Her death came as a shock which none could realize. She will be greatly missed in her home & community where she lived for the past 11 years, where many hearts are sad because of her departure.
Mrs. Blackford was a faithful Christian serving her master faithfully & well. To her, death had no dread. She united with the Free Methodist Church some 15 years ago & from that time has faithfully served her master. During her last illness, her trust was placed in him alone. The following obituary was read by Rev. Thompson.
Estella Edith Byerly was born in Dubuque county, 4 December 1862 & fell to sleep in Jesus at her home near Alburnett, 13 June 1904 at 4:30 p.m. On 29 January 1882 she was united in marriage to J. H. Blackford.
She leaves besides her husband, 7 children to mourn her death, Jessie, Effie, Hubert, Harry, Winnie, Clayton & Forrest also 2 sisters & 3 brothers; besides many sympathizing friends & relatives. She was a kind & devoted wife & mother, a true Christian friend & neighbor.
Earthly trials all are over,
Pain & sorrow now no more.
For she'd reached the golden shore,
And we'll meet her there.
