He was a machinist for 2 years at his father's home, then came to St. Paul, Minnesota in 1856. Next he moved to Lakeville, where he acquired 160 acres, which he sold in 1865 to go to Colorado. He returned to Faribault in 1868, where he purchased a 1/2 interest in the Polar Star flour mill, destroyed by fire on Dec. 9, 1877. By 1878 he was living in Lakeville on a farm (purchased in 1856).
He served in the U.S. Army in 1862 to put down the Sioux Indian uprising.
