Mildred Airy, 84, of Hiawatha, died Saturday, Feb. 22, 1991, at St. Luke's Hospital in Cedar Rapids following a lengthy illness.
Services were held Tuesday, Feb. 25, at the Murdoch Funeral Home in Marion with the Rev. Chris Coble conducting and burial was in the Last Chance Cemetery near Derby, Iowa.
Survivors include three brothers, John of Bloomington, Wis. and Eldon and Raymond, both of Cedar Rapids. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.
She was born on June 28, 1907 in Lucas County and graduated from Drake University majoring in education. She taught in rural schools throughout southern Iowa and was an elementary principal and sixth grade teacher for the Red Oak Community Schools, Davis County elementary supervisor in Bloomfield, elementary supervisor for the Howard Winneshiek Community School and an educational consultant for the Centerville Community Schools.
She devoted her life to the education of children and participated in professional organizations including NEA, ISEA, ASCD and Iowa Educational Consultants. She retired in 1972 to Hiawatha to be nearer her brothers.
She was also a member of DAR, Delta Kappa Gamma, American Association of Univerity Women and Business, Professional Women's Club and the Marion Christian Church-Disciples of Christ.
