She was born July 18, 1918, in East Grand Forks, Minn., to Walter and Regina Austin and was the oldest of 12 girls.
She married Reuben Cleon Altermatt on Dec. 25, 1936.
She lived in Grand Forks, N.D., St Cloud, Minn., Coeur de lane, Idaho, San Francisco, Calif., and moved to Big Falls, Minn., in 1945.
In May of 2010 she became a resident of BF Valley Nursing Home where she resided until her death.
She was a homemaker. She also did painting and interior finishing on houses that her husband built in the area.
Elaine attended the Bigfork Assembly of God Church. She also faithfully attended a regular Bible study at BF Valley.
She loved gardening, crocheting and knitting. She also enjoyed bowling and fishing.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents, one son-in-law, and five sisters.
Survivors include two daughters, Gayle (Tom) Boes, Big Falls, and Janet Hufnagle, Bigfork; six sisters, Carol Kleinsasser, Michigan, Angeline (Ray) Austin, Bemidji, Minn., Darlyne Glinsmann, Luzerne, Iowa, Joanne Driscoll, Grand Forks, N.D., Virginia Austin, Grand Forks, N.D., and Paulette Holman, Albertville, Minn.; six grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren, and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 17, at River of God Full Gospel Church, Big Falls, with the Rev. Michael Stevens officiating.
Interment will be at Evergreen Cemetery, Big Falls.
Visitation will be at noon Saturday at the church.
