This information is from Bible clippings, a letter written about the family, and family recollections.

This branch of the family began using the spelling Gallent (pron. Gal-lent as in "were so gallantly streaming" early in the 1800's. The family Bible shows James II as "Col." which would indicate he served in a militia. (He was over 50 when the Civil War began; he fought in the Mexican War)

Eulogy: "Died--at his residence, near Bethany Church in Amite County Mississippi, Dec. 29, 1892, after a brief illness, Col. James M. Gallent, in his 85th year of his life. The death of this aged servant of God calls for more than a brief announcement.
For over fifty years he has faithfully served the church as a ruling elder. Born in the York District, South Carolina in 1808, when quite a young man (30) he removed to Amite County Mississippi. Here he began life as a teacher.

In two areas he represented his county; the State Legislature, and for many years sat sat as a member of the Board of County Supervisors. For many years he was Postmaster at Ariel, Mississippi, his home. He was united in marriage to Miss Jane C. Dunn. The fruits of this marriage were three sons and six daughters.

In 1850 he made professions of his faith, and united with the Bethany Presbyterian Church. In 1861 he was ordained and elected to the ruling leadership. For many years he was superintendent of the Sunday School.

When failing hearing and sight precluded him from his duties he was always present to help with the instruction of the young. So deaf that he could hear but little of the public preaching, yet he was always, when health and strength permitted, in the assembly of God's people.
