Daughter of George Washington Greathouse (1810-1843) and Martha Nell Hirshman Greathouse Rodenberger (1815-1872).
Married to Andrew Lynne Alexander on March 22, 1863 in Posey County.
In 1895, Matilda Greathouse Alexander opened a reading room in memory of her daughter. In 1903 she donated her private library, containing 3400 books and periodicals, to the Mt. Vernon Public Library Board, where it became the genesis of the Alexandrian Public Library of Mt. Vernon, Indiana.
