Gerald Dean Phillips, 78, of Oskaloosa, died May 27, 2009 at the Mahaska County Hospital. Funeral services will begin at 10:30 am on Saturday, May 30, 2009 at the Harden Funeral Chapel in What Cheer with Reverend Vince Homan officiating. Visitation will be held Friday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. Burial will be in the Sixteen Cemetery near Thornburg. Memorial contributions may be made to Mahaska County Hospice or to What Cheer Fire and Rescue.
Gerald Dean Phillips was born the son of Ernest and Edith (Walsh) Phillips on June 25, 1930 in Thornburg, Iowa. He was a 1949 graduate of the Thornburg High School. On September 22, 1950 he was united in marriage to Margaret Lewis. He is the father of three children; Kevin (Marsha) Phillips of What Cheer, Kathy (Doug) Swim of Oskaloosa and Kelley Phillips of Waukee. Dean is also a granddad to six grandchildren: Angie (Chris) Wedgewood, Jenni (Pat Waters) Phillips, Jamie Vermillion, Jackie and Brett Swim, Erin Phillips and great-grandson Isaac Wedgewood. Dean served in the United States Air Force as a jet mechanic from 1951-1955. After his honorable discharge from the service he lived and farmed in the What Cheer area. In 1965 he began work as a skilled carpenter for several Oskaloosa home builders until his retirement in 1993. Dean and his wife moved to Oskaloosa in 2003.

He was preceded in death by his parents. Surviving are his wife, children, grandchildren and a brother, Merrill and family of Farmington, Conn.
