Aged 32. She died at Bedford County General Hospital about four hours after being shot by 29-year old Barbara Ann Turner, 311 Courtland Drive, Shelbyville Tennessee. The shooting occurred at the home of the Turner woman's sister, Charlon Sheffield, 326 Lane Parkway, Shelbyville, Tennessee.
"When I arrived at the Sheffield home, Judy Ray Alexander was on the floor. She had been shot one time in the abdomen. She told me Barbara Turner had shot her," said Sgt. David Williams of the Shelbyville Police Department.
"Five people were present at the time of the shooting. We received the call at 6:14 pm and we were advised the two women involved, Mrs. Sheffield and a man identified as Gerald F. Reese, 438 Bird Street and the Turner woman's young child were there," Williams continued. "We were told that Judy Ray Alexander was playing with the child and Barbara Turner objected and told her she was not to play with or speak to the child. They started to fight. They were rolling on a couch and on the floor when Barbara Turner pulled the pistol and fired one shot."
The Turner woman had fled to her Courtland Drive home when police arrived, but she was taken into custody there without incident, transported to City Hall and jailed without bond on a charge of attempted first degree murder. Reese, who at first allegedly denied knowing the whereabouts of the weapon used in the shooting, turned a .22 caliber revolver over to Capt. Melvin Claxton. He told police he took the gun away from Mrs. Turner following the shooting.
The fatal shot entered the abdomen, went upward and struck an artery. Mrs. Alexander was prepared for surgery as the call went out to neighboring facilities for O negative blood. Eight units of blood were brought from Tullahoma and eight more from Murfreesboro. Additional blood was being transported here from Nashville when she died about 10:15 pm while undergoing surgery. The charge against Mrs. Turner was changed from attempted first degree murder to first degree murcer about 11:15 pm. Both women have visible facial scratches police say resulted as they fought before the fatal shot was fired.
