Birkett, Skelton, a pioneer, one of the oldest & most prominent citizens of Shelby Co, d. Dec 3 at his home, Shelbyville, buried Henderson Cen. near Todds Point. Born 13, 1820 Cumberland Co, England; went to West India Islands when 19 years old, was a planter. Arrived New York 1847, & arrived Shelby Co, IL 1848, settling in Todds Point where he owned 1100 acres. Served on Board of Supervisors, was member of building committee when the court house was erected. He married 13 Feb 1850, Miss Mary Bland, she d. 1865. Married Miss Elizabeth Lenover 1867, 7 children by first wife, 2 by 2nd. Leaves wife, 6 children: Skelton, Jr., Mrs. George Bricker, Mrs. Dr. (Elizabeth) Williams, Arthur, George, & Henry. Member of the Church of England.
