Abram was born in 1840 near Hodgensville, Kentucky, in what was then Hardin County, and would later become Larue County. His parents were Jeddiah and Barbara Miller Ashcraft, both from early pioneer families in the area. If one were to guess his middle name, it is quite possibly Miller, Abraham Miller being the name of his maternal grandfather.
In about 1852, when he was about 12 years of age, his entire family moved north, stopping first in Missouri, then in Mt. Pleasant Township of Atchison County, Kansas Territory. He apparently remained there the remainder of his life, becoming a prosperous farmer.
In about 1863, Abraham married Georgia Ann Young, daughter of William J. and Mary Ann Collins Young. They were the parents of at least eight children, five sons and three daughters: Edward S., Thomas R., Virginia, William Cyrus, John Wallace, Mary, Livesa and Jesse L. Four of the sons, Edward, Thomas, John and Jesse are buried here on either side of their parents.
