James was the son of Lorenzo Dan and Abby Barnad (Pease) Baker.

"PIONEER RESIDENT OF TACOMA, VETERAN OF CIVIL WAR, DEAD"
"James A. Baker, 83, a resident of Tacoma for 35 years, died at his home, 5410 Asotin street, Friday morning at 9 o'clock. Mr. Baker is survived by his wife, Eva, two sons, Ernest Baker and Louis Baker, and two daughters, Mrs. Nellie Adams and Mrs. Abbie Botsford, all of Tacoma.
Mr. Baker was a veteran of the Civil War and a member of Sheridan Post, G.A.R. He was also an honorary member of the Spanish War Veterans.
He came to Tacoma from Watertown, S.D. and for many years owned and operated a large ranch on Fox Island."
He married first: Susan M. Vaux and second, Eva Maria Stevens, widow of Charles C. Dickinson.
He and Susan had five children.
