Violet Catherine Nicol Brainard (my g.g.grandmother)75 was the eighth child of twelve children born to William May Nicol III and Margaret Pollock (Scottish immigrants from Gillhead, Scotland) She was born on June 6, 1838 in DeKalb, St. Lawrence county, New York.

On March 23, 1859 in DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, NY Violet married James Brainard, second child of Amos Brainard and Lydia Thompson. In 1864 Violet and James moved from DeKalb, NY to Union Township, Mitchell county, Iowa by covered wagon to a farm which was her home at the time of her death.
They had five children.

1. Cora Virilla Brainard (my paternal g. grandmother) b. 1860 DeKalb, NY - 1900 David,IA m. Benjamin Daniel Nicholas four children Violet, Harold, Grace & John. Taught school; Died of TB.

2. Henry David Ross Brainard b. 1863 DeKalb, NY Lived at 45 Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa. Methodist. m.Anna Emelia (Struck) Scantlebury. No children

3. Anna Eliza Brainard b. 1871- 1872 died in infancy

4. Mabel Edith Brainard b. 1874 died in infancy

5. James Alva Brainard b. 1878 died in infancy

Violet was a member of the Methodist Episcopal church in Stacyville, IA where she remained a loyal member. In the later years of her life, she had arthritis and wore a gold watch on a chain around her neck as it was difficult to look up at the clock on the wall. That carved gold watch was passed down to Evelyn Rowe Nelson.

She was survived by one son, Henry, four grandchildren (Violet, Harry, Grace (my grandmother), and Johnnie Nicholas) three g. grandchildren; Three brothers, Robert and Clark Nicol of Milford, IA and David May Nicol of Los Angeles, CA and 2 sisters Mrs. Margaret L. Kesler of Clifty, W VA. and Mrs. Mattie Dickenson of Lake Park, IA . Her funeral was held on Monday, Jan. 26.

She was preceded in death by her daughter Cora Virilla Brainard Nicholas, who died of Tuberculosis (my g. grandmother), two daughters who died in infancy Anna Eliza and Mabel Edith, and a son James Alva Brainard who died also in infancy.
