Henry David Ross Brainard (66) was the second of five children born to James Brainard and Violet Catherine Nicol. He was born in DeKalb, St. Lawrence County, NY in 1863. He lived at 45 Union Township, Mitchell County, Iowa and was a retired farmer. He was a generous man and active in the Methodist church in Stacyville, IA.
On Oct. 10, 1929 in Little Cedar, Iowa Henry married widower, Anna Emelia (Struck) Scantlebury (1864-1936) born in Kilbourn, WI the daughter of Susanna Gujer (1844-1923 Swiss immigrant) and John Henry Struck (1832-1887 German immigrant) who settled in Kilbourn City Columbia County, WI.
He took care of his mother, Violet Catherine Nicol Brainard before she died. He willed his 80 acre farm to Grace Edna Nicholas Rowe, my grandmother, wife of Charles Henry Rowe.
Henry unexpectedly died of heart failure aggravated by heat exhaustion working in his corn field. Anna, his wife had check him at 11:30 a.m. and he was fine, but by noon she could not see him as she was ready to call him to lunch.
They farmed in Union Township, Mitchell County 1 mile west of David, Iowa. They were members of the Methodist Church in Stacyville, IA. (no children)
He is preceded in death by his parents, James Brainard and Violet Catherine Nicol, and all of his siblings,who died early: Anna Eliza, Mabel and James Alva Brainard as well as his sister Cora Virilla Brainard Nicholas.
