Enlisted in Company F of the Fourth Michigan Volunteer Infantry on June 20, 1861, for 3 years. Wounded in action at Fredericksburg, Virginia, on December 12,1862. Discharged for disability on February 14, 1863, at Washington , D.C.

Enlisted as Musician in Company C, Twenty-Second Wisconsin Infantry on January 29, 1864. Transferred out on June 10, 1865.Also served briefly in the Unassigned Company of the Trird Wisconsin Infantry.
