Samuel Alexander. "Life is not a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming - 'WOW - What a Ride!'" Anonymous. Samuel Alexander, our beloved father, grandfather, uncle and friend ended his journey peacefully on February 16, 2009. Sam was born in the Bronx, New York City on January 26, 1914 to Henrietta and Joseph Alexander. He was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School and studied business at City College of New York. In 1940, Sam married his great love, Vera, and together they created an exciting life. Family and friends were most important to them and everything they did revolved around those that they loved. He was the most generous and positive influence in all of our lives. After serving in the army during World War II, Sam pursued a retail career which eventually led the family to Ohio. In Akron, Sam and his partner Matt Tallal founded HOME CENTERS in 1952. It grew into the largest regional major appliance retailer in the Midwest and they received numerous awards for their innovative merchandising. Sam and Vera retired to Tucson in 1977 and pursued their love of travel, golf, standard poodles and the desert. In addition, he loved his pool, brandy and sodas, mochas (with an extra shot of chocolate) and chicken sandwiches. Sam was a lifelong member of B'nai B'rith and Temple Israel in Akron Ohio. He was predeceased by his brother Melvin and his wife Vera. Sam is survived by his daughter, Diane of Tucson; son and daughter-in-law, Lee and Jennifer of Fall City, WA; grandson, Benjamin of Newport Beach, Ca. and granddaughter, Rachael (the best birthday present ever) of Houston TX., Additional survivors include nephews and nieces and especially Richard Alexander and his wife Lynne. Friend Margaret Rios (Margie) and devoted canine friend Dakota will miss him greatly. And, of course, Irving Schwartz. Many thanks to Catalina In Home Services and his caregiver, Aziza Dujmic. We also want to thank the amazing staff from TMC Hospice for helping us all to make this transition. If you wish, please remember Dad with a gift to the charity of your choice or to one of his favorites including: Ara Parseghian Medical Research Foundation, 3530 E. Do not stand at my grave and weep,
I am not there - I do not sleep.
I am the thousand winds that blow,
I am the diamond glints in snow,
I am the sunlight on ripened grain,
I am the gentle autumn rain.
As you awake with morning's hush
I am the swift-up-flinging rush
Of quiet birds in circling flight.
Do not stand at my grave and cry,
I am not there - I did not die.
