Charles Taylor HINES was born in San Francisco on 10 Feb 1913. His headstone engraving erroneously shows 2 Feb 1913. The Funeral Home record, birth and death records from the CA Dept of Health Services and the US SSDI, all show 10 Feb 1913.
[space left for addition of 1920 - 1930 census and other information]
In the 1934 San Francisco City Directory, Charles is shown living at 761 Cole St, very close to where he grew up and where his mother still lived. Linda WYANT does not have a separate listing in the 1934 book. In the 1935 City Directory, both Chas T HINES and Linda WYANT are listed separately as living at 761 Cole St.
On 2 Mar 1939, it was reported in the San Francisco Chronicle, Pg 11, that a marriage license was issued in San Mateo County to "HINES-WYANT -- Charles T HINES 26 and Linda M WYANT 23 both of Santa Cruz". Shortly thereafter, Charles married Linda May WYANT. Linda was also born in San Francisco, on 6 July 1915. Her parents were Charles L WYANT, an Indiana native, and Linda M MORGAN, who was born in Wales, UK, and emigrated to the USA.
They had three children, Charles Taylor HINES, Jr, (4 Nov 1939 - 10 Jan 2001), John Warren HINES (b1942) and Sally Ann HINES (b1948).
In the 1 Apr 1940 census, Charles, 27, Linda, 24, and 6 month old Charles Jr are living at 810 Taraval St, which they rent. Charles's occupation is a Bartender in a "retail bar" (he worked 5 weeks in 1939). Linda has no occupation shown and was not looking for a job. He lists having completed 4 years of college and Linda completed 1 year of college.
During the years of WWII, Charles took leave from his bartending career to work at a Dalmo Victor plant in San Francisco, making "wartime military materials" (e.g. incendiary bombs, hand grenades, early radar antennas). This was noted briefly in an article in the 6 May 1943 San Francisco Chronicle, on Page 6. Dalmo Victor (later a division of Textron Inc.) moved from San Francisco in 1944, to the Peninsula.
In the 1945 Polk's Crocker-Langley San Francisco City Directory, Charles and Linda are listed as still living at 810 Taraval St, and his occupation is Bartender.
At the time of his death in 1970, he had worked as a bartender for 30 years, and was a member of Bartenders Union Local No. 41. At his death, he worked at the Beverly Plaza Hotel. He died Thurs 17 Dec 1970 in Children's Hospital, from cardiac arrest at 7:35 p.m. His funeral was held at 10 a.m. Monday 21 Dec at the Funeral Home Chapel of Gantner-Felder-Kenny, 1965 Market St. His church affiliation was St Boniface Roman Catholic, 133 Golden Gate Ave. He was buried in the Bartenders' Plot of Cypress Lawn cemetery.
On 5 Jan 1973, Linda, Charles's widow, remarried to James John MORAN. She was 57, and he 53, a WWII US Navy veteran. After just 8 years of marriage, James died on 10 Sept 1981. Linda did not marry again. She lived on in San Francisco until her death on 2 May 2006. They are buried together in Golden Gate National Cemetery. Their Find A Grave memorial numbers are: James #59520674 and Linda #59524607. There is a photo of their headstone on each memorial.
INTERIM NOTE regarding Charles's parents (pending a more complete biography):
Charles Taylor HINES's mother was Hilda Katherine née BINNINGER.
Hilda's first husband, Charles Franklin HINES, died in 1929. Charles's mother then married Mervyn C HENRY sometime between 1 Apr 1930 and 1 Apr 1940 (census dates). Hilda and Mervyn are buried near each other.
Hilda's and Mervyn's Find A Grave memorials linked below (Mervyn's via Hilda's) are being edited to reflect more complete biographies for them.
