Martha M. Absher
Mrs. Martha M. Absher, wife of W. H. Absher, of the east side, died at their home on May 24. She was born in Burleson county, Texas, December 9, 1867, and was aged 40 years, five months and fifteen days. Mr. and Mrs. Absher lived in Texas until March 29, 1906, and then moved to Oregon. She joined the Church of Christ in 1880 and was baptized by Brother Dave Pennington, of Austin, Texas, and has been a consistent christian since that time. She was married to W. H. Absher in 1866 [sic] and leaves a husband and nine children, the youngest being four years of age. The oldest daughter is the wife of J. H. Hicks, of this place. Five other girls and three boys are left at home, and Mr. Absher has the sympathy of the entire community in this peculiarly sad dispensation of Providence.
Mothers of the community, you cannot take the mother's place, but you can more nearly do it than any one else on earth. Those little boys and girls want some one to whom they may go with aching hearts in time of trouble, and there is your opportunity to do the Lord's service. We do not fear that you will fail to grasp it. The father and the older girls have a great responsibility resting upon them now, and your counsel and sympathy will be of great value to them. You know what you would want your neighbor to do for your children under like conditions. Do it. Mr. Absher has been employed hauling lumber from the planer to the city, during the entire weeks going home on Saturday evenings of each week. On last Saturday he was later than usual with his day's work, and was compelled to stop for the night, but no one knew when the summons came. One of her little children was with her in bed, but knew nothing of the mother's death until morning. Mrs. Absher was subject to epilepsy, and it is supposed that she passed away in one of those spells.
The funeral services were conducted at the Pine Grove cemetery on Monday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Rev. Troy Shelley. S. E. Bartmess had charge of the interment.
