After serving in the U.S. Coast Guard during World War II, he settled in Chula Vista and started his career as an aerospace engineer. The family moved to Yucaipa in 1965, when he accepted a position with the Aerospace Corporation.

He moved to Torrance in 1972 when the company relocated,and returned to Yucaipa when he retired in 1991.

He was an assistant scoutmaster in the early years of Yucaipa's Boy Scout Troop 9 and was a member of the Yucaipa Masonic Lodge where he was an officer and recipient of the Hiram Award in 1997.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Doris; son Rick of Yucaipa; daughter, Amy and husband John Harper of Ukiah; son John and wife Kathy of Yucaipa; two grandsons, Travis and Sid of Ukiah; one granddaughter Rachel of Yucaipa; sister Jane and husband Johnny of San Jose; cousin Jim Mason of New Mexico and many nieces and nephews.
